When Should I Replace My Mattress?

How old is your mattress? If you’re like most people, it might take you a minute to figure out your mattress’s age. It’s not like you throw your bed a birthday party every year! In fact, you may need to track down an old receipt or check the mattress’s tag to figure out how old it is. In any case, it’s typically a good idea to know your mattress’s age so that you generally know when it’s time to buy a new one. An aging mattress can have a huge impact on your ability to get a good night’s sleep. So, you might be wondering, when should I replace my mattress?

When Should I Replace My Mattress?

Experts disagree on the exact number of years. According to the Sleep Foundation, under normal conditions, a mattress should be replaced every 6 to 8 years. According to The Spruce, a mattress should be replaced every 10 to 15 years. Numerous factors can influence these guidelines, however. For example, if the mattress in question is located in your guest room and not used on a daily basis, it will last longer than the mattress you sleep on every night. In addition, the type and quality of the mattress will impact its longevity. Age clearly isn’t everything! But if you’re wondering when to replace your mattress, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Is your mattress more than 8 years old?
  • Is your mattress negatively impacting your ability to sleep?
  • Is your mattress damaged?
  • Does your mattress feel saggy in certain areas?
  • If you have an innerspring mattress, have you noticed that it’s louder than it used to be?
  • Do you find that you sleep better when you’re sleeping at a hotel or a friend’s house?
  • If you suffer from allergies or asthma, have you noticed your symptoms worsening?
  • Do you often wake up with stiff joints or sore muscles?
  • Do you not feel well-rested when you wake up?

Unfortunately, there isn’t a clear-cut way to determine that it’s time to replace your mattress. But if you answered yes to one or more of the questions above, you should seriously consider whether it might be time for a new mattress. And when you begin shopping for a new mattress, keep in mind that the following factors will influence how long your new mattress lasts:

  • Quality: Low-quality mattresses have the shortest lifespans. Look for a mattress made with high-quality materials if you’re aiming for durability. In addition, if you’re considering an innerspring or hybrid mattress, look for a low coil gauge (i.e., thicker coils). If you want a foam mattress, look for a higher foam density. And if you’re shopping for a latex mattress, choose natural latex over synthetic for a longer lifespan.
  • Material: All-foam mattresses don’t last as long because they’re prone to sagging. Hybrid mattresses may have similar issues, but they’re typically made with higher quality materials, so they last a little longer. Latex mattresses tend to be the longest-lasting option, performing well for up to 12 years.
  • Maintenance: Unsurprisingly, a mattress will last longer if you take good care of it. Use a mattress protector to keep your mattress free of allergens, dust mites, spills, and more. In addition, rotate your mattress every three months or so (check the manufacturer’s instructions).
