Spring time means flowers, warm weather and cleaning your mattress. Yes, you read that right. Your mattress goes through a lot of wear and tear over the years, and most people don’t realize just how dirty it gets. You sleep on it every night (unless you’re sent to sleep on the couch—in which case, you’re on your own) so you want it to be the cleanest it can be.
Dead skin cells, sweat, stains, and those renegade cookie crumbs have found their way into your mattress. Even though you change your sheets periodically, it’s important not to neglect your mattress. Follow these simple steps to get your mattress ready for spring!
Step 1: Vacuum
After removing the sheets and mattress cover, vacuum any crumbs, pet hair, and dirt.
Step 2: Clean the stains
Depending on what kind of stains you have, you’ll need to bring in the big guns:
Big Guns Recipe:
Dash of hydrogen peroxide
A squirt of liquid dish soap
A sprinkle of baking soda
Mix with water in a spray bottle for 30 seconds and treat stains.
You can also purchase enzyme cleaners or make your own home-brewed cleaner.
Step 3: Deodorize
Spread a small amount of baking soda over your entire mattress, let it sit for a few hours, then vacuum. This should absorb any odors hiding in your mattress.
Step 4: Air it out
Take your mattress outside for a breath of fresh air; let it soak up the sun.
Step 5: Cover your mattress
Do your mattress a favor and purchase a mattress cover. It will shorten the cleaning process and can be easily washed with your sheets.
