How Often Should You Flip Your Mattress?

Some people flip their mattresses regularly. Other people never do it. No matter your approach, you might be surprised to learn that the common wisdom that tells us to flip our mattresses may no longer apply to most mattresses on the market. So, how often should you flip your mattress, if at all? And if you shouldn’t flip your mattress, what should you be doing instead?

Why Has the Advice on Flipping Mattresses Changed?

In the past, mattress flipping was recommended to extend the life of a mattress. However, modern mattress construction can make flipping most mattresses a bad idea. Most mattresses produced these days are designed to be “single-sided” mattresses, where a top layer of cushiony material is supported by layers of firmer material on the bottom. Flipping the mattress will reverse the layers, leaving you sleeping on the support material and missing out on the comfort of the top layer.

That being said, some mattresses are designed to be flipped regularly. This includes mattresses with sides that have different firmness levels, or mattresses that are designed to be flipped to give them more durability and longevity. If you aren’t sure if you purchased a flippable mattress or not, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions.

If I Can’t Flip My Mattress, What Should I Do Instead?

While flipping your mattress isn’t always a good idea, rotating your mattress regularly is a great way to extend its overall lifespan. Rotating your mattress can help you make sure that your mattress isn’t constantly getting worn out in the same places, which will help spread out the daily wear-and-tear it experiences. A regularly rotated mattress can outlast a mattress that isn’t regularly rotated by a year or even more.

But how often should you rotate your mattress? If you want the official answer, the manufacturer’s instructions that came with your mattress will provide it. If you’ve misplaced those, these general guidelines will work for most mattress types:

  • Innerspring mattresses should be rotated between two and five times per year.
  • Memory foam mattresses should be rotated one or two times per year.
  • Latex mattresses should also be rotated one or two times per year.

In general, if you rotate your mattress a couple of times a year, you can trust that you’re adding to its overall lifespan. However, it’s also important to remember that every mattress eventually needs to be replaced. If your mattress has sags and lumps no matter how many times you rotate it, or if it’s uncomfortable to sleep on, rotating it will not help. Instead, it’s time to invest in a newer model.
