Deep Clean Your Mattress for Spring

Whether you jump for joy at the thought of deep cleaning all the crannies and crevices of your home, or you detest making a few passes with the vacuum that quietly sits in the backroom closet, spring cleaning still manages to be a popular topic for both homeowners and renters. When was the last time you “spring cleaned” your mattress, though? If you’re already getting a migraine just thinking about giving your mattress a deep clean, don’t worry! It’s simpler than you might think, and it really doesn’t take that much time—maybe a couple of hours, at the most.

Last year, we wrote about a simple way to clean your mattress that uses baking soda. If following the steps below seems like a daunting task, check out our Spring Cleaning Your Mattress post to see an easier way to clean your mattress. Keep in mind, though, that this method will be most effective for treating stains and getting that super-deep clean mattress.

Mattress cleaning can be grouped into three separate stages, and they are as follows:

  • Strip
  • Clean
  • Flip

The first stage, “strip,” is relatively simple. All you need to do is completely strip your mattress. This includes sheets, comforters, duvets, and even mattress covers. Once the mattress is completely stripped, go run some errands. This is important, because you want to let you mattress “air out” for at least 30 minutes. An hour would be ideal. In fact, if you really want a thorough, deep clean, bring your mattress outside. Lay down some towels first, then set the mattress up against your house or a porch railing for a couple of hours.

Once you’ve stripped the mattress and aired it out thoroughly, you can move on to the next step—clean. This step is by far the most labor-intensive, but it’s where your mattress will benefit the most. With a hose attached to your vacuum cleaner, make a couple passes on the whole mattress. Be sure to vacuum both the top, bottom, and sides. With the vacuuming complete, grab some upholstery cleaner and use it to treat any spot stains that you find. You could use a kitchen sponge with the cleaner for more effective mattress stain removal. If you’d like, after the stains are removed, consider purchasing and installing a mattress protector for your investment. This will make stain treating much easier.

Now that you’ve cleaned your mattress, there’s only one more step to “spring clean” your mattress! Bring the mattress back to your bed frame, and flip the mattress over to the opposite side that you sleep on. This step is important because you want make sure that you’re wearing your mattress evenly. If you only clean your mattress once a year, be sure to flip your mattress every six months. This will help ensure longevity with your mattress!
