Choosing the Right Pillow

You lay your head on it every night to fall asleep, but is your pillow right for you? Often forgotten, neglected, and misunderstood, your pillow can be the difference between sleeping great and another sleepless night. There are a couple of important factors you should consider when choosing the right pillow.

First, you’ll need to know if it’s time to toss your current pillow. We all know that, over time, pillows can lose their shape or go flat. That is not the only issue with an old pillow, however. Did you know that dirt, oil, and dust mites can accumulate in your pillow over time as well? These unwanted intruders can cause acne, allergies, and, according to the American Lung Association, they have even been known to cause asthma. Depending on how often you clean your pillows, you should consider changing them out every 1-3 years.

If you’re in the market for a new pillow, according to Medical Doctor Andrew Weil, choosing the right pillow for you is dependent upon how you prefer to sleep. If you sleep on your back, you should consider a thinner pillow that prevents your head from being thrown too far forward. Firm, thick pillows are ideal if you sleep on your side, because the thickness will fill the distance between your ear and shoulder. For those who sleep on their stomach, a thin, flat pillow should be used to help prevent lower back pain.

It is important to remember that not all pillows are created equal. Fluffier pillows usually last longer, but they lose their effectiveness as they lose their fluff. If you suffer from allergies, consider an antibacterial & anti-allergen pillow. If you prefer to stay cool during your slumber, you may want to consider a temperature-controlled pillow for a better night’s sleep.
