Keeping Cool at Night

We’ve all done it: woken up in the middle of the night during the hot summer months in a deep sweat. It’s uncomfortable to wake up in damp pajamas and sheets because of nighttime sweats. Keeping cool overnight in the summer can be a challenge, but luckily, it can be avoided with a few easy changes.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, sleeping in a cool room-around 65 degrees- will give you a better night’s sleep. Biologically, our bodies are built to control our internal temperatures based on our sleep schedules, also known as the circadian rhythm. Your body temperature is usually higher throughout the day and decreases as you become drowsy. Sleeping in a cool room can not only help you become sleepy, it can also help you stay asleep because your body won’t be working overtime to regulate your body temperature from being too hot and producing sweat to cool down. However, be sure not to keep your room too cool as your body will work in overdrive by contracting your muscles to warm you up which can also cause a restless night.

Of course your mattress plays a huge role in regulating body temperature overnight. Gel and memory foam mattresses like the Serta iComfort ensure that you stay comfortable regardless of temperature or humidity. Mattresses that contain gel beads squander excess heat, making it easier to get a great night’s sleep. At Beautyrest Sleep Gallery, we carry a variety of mattresses from quality brands like Beautyrest, Serta and Tempur-Pedic that will keep you cool at night! Check out our Labor Day sale!

Along with keeping your room cool and choosing the right mattress for your body, you’ll want to take your pajamas, sheets and pillows into consideration. Fabrics and materials range in breathability which can have a huge impact on regulating body temperature. In the summer months, avoid thicker materials and choose sheets and pajamas that are made from breathable cotton. Pillows that contain gel and charcoal are ideal during the summer because of their moisture management properties and ability to absorb perspiration.
